As Congress recently convened to certify the action of the 2020 US Presidential Election, President Donald Trump took to Twitter to defend his allegations of widespread fraud in the November election. The President’s tweet highlighted a conspiracy theory involving the events of January 6th, which some fringe groups have deemed “The Jan 6 Revolution”.
This particular conspiracy theory has been circulating in the darker areas of the internet for weeks. As the story goes, antifa and other left-wing militias are the underlying orchestrators of the January 6th protests that led to the storming of the Capitol. These militias are purported to have thus concealed their involvement in order to blame the protest and violence on conservatives in order to topple the republican movement.
Since the insurrection, Trump has increased his rhetoric in regards to the January 6th incident, going as far as to call it the “true 2020 election”. He has continued to insist that the events of that day should be investigated in order to expose the “truth”. While it is true that the January 6th protests provided a platform to air grievances concerning the legitimacy of the 2020 election, it is currently unclear if any such investigation would be able to shed legitimate light on the President’s claims of fraud.
The President’s campaign has remained adamant that there are questions of voter fraud in multiple states, and that the Jan. 6 event proves these allegations. However, research from the experts indicates that all irregularities concerning the 2020 election have since been investigated and confirmed as non-fraudulent. Even if the January 6th conspiracy theory could be proven true, it would not be enough to support a significant fraud case in the US Presidential election.
While the President is taking a hardline stance in the face of criticism, and his supporters are rallying around the conspiracy theory of the “Jan 6 Revolution”, the reality is that the US election system has proven to be secure and valid. Until some substantial evidence surfaces, the President would be best served refocusing his efforts on the many real issues that are facing our nation.
