After months of back-and-forth, it appears the squabble between House Democrats and Hunter Biden, President Joe Biden’s son, has been resolved. Hunter Biden has reportedly agreed to testify before a House panel concerning his role in the Ukrainian energy firm known as Burisma.
The economic ties between Hunter Biden and Burisma have been under intense scrutiny ever since the 2016 Presidential election, with Republicans using them to allege corruption on the part of the Biden family. The controversy came to a head in October 2019 when a Government Accountability Office (GAO) report found that the Biden-Burisma dealings violated the Foreign Bribery Prohibition Act.
At first, Hunter Biden refused to comply with the pressure from the House, citing privacy concerns and resentment over Republicans using his father’s name to gain political advantage. However, his newly released statement explains that he is willing to do what it takes to clear his name and that of his family.
“I am confident that any review of these matters will prove that all actions on my part were proper and ethical,” the statement reads. “I am committed to taking any reasonable steps necessary to resolve this discussion in a manner that respects the integrity of the Committees’ oversight responsibilities and my personal privacy.”
Despite this offer, Republicans remain unsatisfied, calling on Hunter Biden to provide copies of his financial records from the time period in question. What documents he turns over to the committee, if any, remains to be seen.
Regardless, it is clear that Hunter Biden has taken an important first step towards defending himself and refuting the allegations made against him. Regardless of the outcome, it is obvious that he is intent on proving to both Republicans and Democrats that he is a person of integrity.
