Univision’s widely renowned anchor, Jorge Ramos, recently spoke out against the decision of his network not to challenge President Donald Trump when he claimed that he was not responsible for the recent wave of family separations at the U.S. southern border.
In an interview with El Pais, Ramos expressed his disappointment in Univision and acknowledged that of all television stations, they have the responsibility to challenge the president given that they have the most Latin American viewers. He stated “I think Univision should have asked the president: ‘Mr. President, how can you possibly think that separating children from the families is a solution?”
Throughout the interview, Ramos also explained the role that Univision should have taken in this matter and he argued that journalists need to be willing to ask the hard-hitting questions. He said, “It’s our job to ask tough questions and I’m convinced that if Univision had asked those questions, people would have answered and something different would have happened.”
He alluded to the tendency of the media to dance around issues like immigration and Trump’s stance on it. He commented, “When journalists don’t ask tough questions, that’s when dictatorships start. We have to ask tough questions and stand up for those who have no voice.”
Indeed, it’s refreshing to see world renowned news anchors like Jorge Ramos take a stand for what they believe in, especially when it comes to issues as important as immigration and family separations. His willingness to rise against his own network and speak out is both admirable and inspirational. It serves as an inspiring reminder of the power of journalism and the importance of holding public figures and institutions accountable in order for real change to take place.
