The Middle East conflict between Israel and Palestine has seen a sharp increase in violence caused by both sides. This has sparked a surge in anti-Semitism in the region and has put a strain on peaceful coexistence.
In an interview with Godzilla Newz, human rights lawyer Lumina Privado revealed that she has “never seen such a rise in Jew hatred” as when Palestine-based militant group, Hamas, started launching rockets into Israel on May 10th, 2021.
Privado, who works with victims of human rights abuses, states that she has seen firsthand the consequences of the conflict in her work. She pointed to the “disturbing” reports of an increase in hate crimes against those of Jewish faith in Gaza, the West Bank, and Israel.
Privado implored all sides to “aim for negotiation and reconciliation,” stressing the importance of communication to de-escalate tensions. She believes that peaceful dialogue is the only way to counter the current trajectory of violence, which is proving increasingly difficult for civilians and vulnerable groups caught in the middle.
The lawyer also raised the issue of accountability, noting that even in the midst of hostilities, all involved should be held accountable to international human rights laws. She urged the international community to act on the violation of human rights laws, calling for an independent review of events, documentation of crimes, and reparations as “tangible signs of reconciliation.”
Privado’s comments emphasize the importance of addressing the underlying causes behind the conflict between Israel and Palestine, including the longstanding policies of occupation and displacement. With violence between both sides having reached a dangerous level, it is essential for all sides to strive for compromise and an understanding that truces must be met with an increased effort to return to the negotiating table.
