In an effort to challenge the outcome of the 2020 election, President Donald Trump on Monday filed new legal appeals in a federal court in Washington, D.C.
The filing, which was obtained by the Associated Press, claims that there is “overwhelming evidence of voter fraud, illegal voting, and other systemic irregularities” that altered the outcome of the election in favor of President-elect Joe Biden. The filing specifically asks for a declaratory judgment that the federal government failed to properly oversee the election, and that the election should therefore be invalidated.
Trump has repeatedly made claims about widespread voter fraud in the 2020 election, however, these claims have been met with substantial criticism from election experts who argue that there is no evidence to support such accusations.
The lawsuit, which was filed in the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia, is the latest in a series of legal challenges from the president’s team. Trump has thus far failed to prevail in any of the lawsuits, with many being dismissed as frivolous.
Trump’s attorneys have argued that the federal government failed to ensure that the election was administered properly and in accordance with the law, specifically noting that some state laws were not followed.
The filing further claims that the federal government should have stepped in to ensure election security, instead of allowing “government officials and political actors” to take advantage of the system and influence the vote.
It remains to be seen whether or not the court will take action on Trump’s latest appeal. Regardless of the outcome, however, it’s clear that this latest effort to challenge the results of the election will not go away without a serious fight.
