The 2020 Presidential campaign season has been full of surprises, and yesterday’s news that one of the Democratic candidates, Rep. Dan Phillips, will not be running for reelection in the House is no exception.
Phillips, who initially announced his presidential bid in July, was considered a top-tier candidate among the crowded field for the Democratic nomination. With his progressive views and passionate speaking style, Phillips had become a favorite among many progressive voters.
However, Phillips revealed in an interview with MSNBC that he would not be running for reelection in the House of Representatives in 2020.
Explaining his decision, Phillips said, “I recognize that my candidacy was an opportunity to move our country forward. However, I feel that it is no longer in my best interest—or in the best interest of the progressive cause—to continue my campaign for the Democratic nomination.”
Phillips went on to explain that while he was highly confident in his own political platform, he felt that it was best to follow his heart and focus energies closer to home. He said, “I am grateful for the support I have received from so many people around the country, but I believe that it is important to prioritize my work in the House and to focus on programs that will directly benefit my constituents rather than pursuing a goal that I know will bring my values into the national spotlight.”
The news of Phillips’ decision comes as a surprise to many, especially since the Democratic field is still so wide open. With Phillips out of the race, the possibilities of who will claim the Democratic nomination have now become even more difficult to predict.
Although Phillips will no longer be running for president, his commitment to progressive causes and his determination to fight for what he believes in has earned him the respect and admiration of millions across the country. He has made an impact on the 2020 Presidential race and will no doubt continue to make a positive difference in the future.
