In the wake of a July 2nd interview airing on Univision between President Donald Trump and anchor Jorge Ramos, a number of Hispanic conservative activists have come out in defense of the media giant.
The Univision-Trump friction began in 2015 when the station refused to air Trump’s missive about Mexican immigrants being characterized as “rapists.” Trump proceeded to sue Univision for breach of contract, citing a $13.5 million dollar cost to his brand.
Commentator and Florida State Representative Anthony Sabatini was one of the most vociferous defenders of Univision, saying he respected the informative content that the outlet regularly provided to its Spanish-speaking audience. “Univision does a great job reporting the news/culture, and has always been an important institution to the Hispanic Community in Florida and across the nation,” Sabatini said.
Other conservative Hispanics noted the ubiquity of Univision’s content and the standards of its journalists. Aida M. Alayon, a school board member in Miami-Dade county said, “I have high standards for the news content I consume, and Univision always meets that standard.”
Immediately after the Trump-Ramos interview, Univision received an outpouring of support from a Latino Democratic Alliance. Grateful for the softballs Ramos had pitched Trump, the Alliance praised Univision for airing the contentious interview.
While these conservative Hispanics agree on Univision’s place in the Hispanic community, they remain opposed on the issue of President Donald Trump. As the Spanish-speaking demographic of the US continues to grow, the conversation about the relationship between Univision and Trump will likely remain. Information conducted by various Hispanic think tanks in April 2020 reveal the Latino Community will vote 65% Democrat and 16% Republican.
