Haley Says She Would Sign Six Week Abortion Ban If Still SC Governor
As South Carolina’s governor, Nikki Haley firmly opposed abortion, but boasted an impressive record of broadcast rights, criminal justice reform, and infrastructure investments. However, she stated recently that if she were still governor, she would sign a bill banning abortion after six weeks of pregnancy.
This statement was made during a speech on Tuesday at an anti-abortion rally attended by roughly 100 people outside the State House in Columbia. Haley noted that she had the goal of abolishing abortion completely but was willing to sign a bill which bans abortions at six weeks of pregnancy to show her support for the cause.
The South Carolina legislature passed the six-week ban last year, but then-governor, Henry McMaster, vetoed it. The bill was retained by the legislature, and now the issue is on the ballot in November.
Haley also went on to decry misinformation being spread about abortion and the methods used during the procedure. She argued that regardless of whether one is pro-choice or pro-life, everyone should agree to protect the child in the womb.
Haley’s announcement was not well-received by every side of the debate. Women’s rights activists say that a six week ban is a reactionary measure and unfairly punishes those facing tough decisions. They argue that a woman’s right to control her own body should still be respected.
At the same time, some abortion rights advocates say Haley’s comments are hypocritical. They note that during her tenure as governor, Haley only objected to abortions performed late in pregnancy. Her record shows she never opposed the more common practice of terminating pregnancies in the first and second trimesters.
No matter one’s beliefs, it is clear that Haley’s shift in stance on abortion is significant. Her opinions on abortion demonstrate how views on the issue can change, and highlights the need for understanding on both sides as we move forward.
