Donald Trump has solidified his lead in the key state of New Hampshire in the wake of the Monmouth University poll released on August 30. Trump earned 33% of the vote in the state, four points higher than his nearest rival, former Massachusetts Governor Bill Weld, who earned 29%.
The poll also reports that South Carolina Governor Nikki Haley has seen a substantial jump in her popularity, following her performance in the second round of 2020 Republican debates. Before the debate, Haley was polling at around 4% in New Hampshire. Following the debate, Haley’s approval rating rose to 9%, making her the third place overall.
The Monmouth poll also reveals that the support for President Trump in New Hampshire has not decreased after his rocky performance in a recent Fox News town hall. Trump also received significant support from Republican voters in the Granite State, with 71% of primary voters viewing him favorably.
Despite Trump’s impressive lead, the poll showed that only 39% of Republican voters in New Hampshire believe that Trump should definitely stay in office. This indicates that some Republicans are still uncertain about the President’s effectiveness, and could potentially cast doubt on his reelection chances in the state.
The Monmouth University Poll is the latest indicator of the current political landscape in New Hampshire, and the growing support for alternative candidates like Haley. Despite Trump’s clear lead, the poll numbers show that Republican voters in the state are still open to the possibility of changing their minds and choosing another candidate. With the election season keeping close watch on this back and forth struggle, New Hampshire could become the deciding factor in the 2020 election.
