Former Republican presidential candidate and United States Senator Rick Santorum has recently called on the 2024 Republican presidential field not to shrink but to become even more consolidated.
Santorum, who ran for the Republican nomination in 2012 and 2016, believes that when it comes to the 2024 Republican field, there should be fewer candidates so that the party can focus on one particular candidate and put themselves in a better position to win the general election next November.
Santorum believes that it is important for the Republican Party to not split up the voters by having too many candidates. Instead, he sees it being better for the party to focus on one candidate and for the other candidates to drop out and support this one candidate so that the GOP can have better luck when it comes to the general election.
In addition to this, Santorum believes that the Republican candidates should avoid going negative when it comes to their campaigns. Santorum believes that by going negative and attacking one another, the United States will become even more divided and ultimately push away voters that may have otherwise been open to voting Republican in the general election.
The former senator also noted that the best thing the Republican Party can do for their convention is to select a candidate that is able to bridge the gap between traditional republicans and the more conservative members of the party so that the GOP is better positioned to win in November.
Whether or not the Republican Party will take on this advice and stick to one particular candidate is yet to be seen, but Santorum’s comments are sure to make waves within the party and should start a discussion about consolidation and the path to a Republican win come November 2024.
