As the 2020 election quickly approaches, many voters in Miami-Dade County, Florida are beginning to shape their political beliefs. In particular, many of them are staunchly choosing Ron DeSantis for governor, of which he currently is, while evading from potentially supporting him as president.
Despite his current approval rating of 75 percent in the state, the main reason why Miami-Dade County voters are pushing DeSantis away is due to the strict adherence to party lines made explicit by the State’s Republican Party. He has received criticism for what many perceive as putting Trump’s re-election above the state’s local wellbeing.
DeSantis is known to have strongly swung to the President’s rhetoric of immigration enforcement and voter suppression. This has led to much concern within Miami-Dade County, many of whom are immigrants with family members currently residing in the United States.
Despite this, it does not appear to be entirely a lost cause, as many of these same voters agree that the Governor is uniquely qualified to handle the state’s growing issues such as the impact of rising sea level and the importance of education reform.
Overall, the issue of the election in Miami-Dade County increasingly become more complex. It has become a personal choice for those individuals who are ultimately tasked with the monumental challenge of making a decision. While they may not back his candidacy for president, many in Miami-Dade County still believe that Ron DeSantis is best suited for the governor’s position.
