The US Senate’s Republican party erupted into fury today over President Donald Trump’s suggestion to freeze military resources for incoming president Joe Biden’s transition team.
The suggestion came during a press conference earlier today, where the president detailed his plans to keep a firm grip on power and the country’s military resources, despite Biden’s victory in the 2020 presidential election.
Trump has proposed freezing funding allocated towards the transition team, which is considered a critical part of the process involving the transfer of power to the incoming president.
Senate Republicans quickly jumped on the statement, criticizing Trump for attempting to deny Biden the legitimate access to vital resources required for the process. Sen. Mitt Romney led the barrage of criticism, accusing the current President of making “irresponsible” and “dangerous” claims.
Other Republican senators, including Sen. Lindsey Graham, expressed dismay at the suggestion, citing Trump’s words as not just unconstitutional, but a “direct threat” and “jeopardy” to Biden’s path to transition.
In a joint statement, Graham and Romney stated that the transition of power needed to happen smoothly and at once” and that any suggestion that could limit or delay the process amounted to a “subversion” of the Constitution’s process for installing a new president.
While some Republicans, such as Sen. Tommy Tuberville, are still offering their support to Trump, the bill of political dissent brought forth by leading senators appears to dismiss Trump’s suggestion as a direct attack on democracy and a legitimate obstruction of the process.
