In the ongoing criminal trial of tech mogul Sam Bankman Fried, prosecutors have drawn a comparison between one of the defense’s argument and the movie “Dumb and Dumber.”
The case is being presided over by a San Francisco jury, with Mr. Fried taking the monumentous step of defending himself against an array of charges including securities fraud and insider trading. In a highly unusual move, the prosecution in this case has taken particular offense to the fact that one of Mr. Fried’s arguments in defense appears to be drawn directly from the plot of the classic comedy “Dumb and Dumber.”
The specifics of Mr. Fried’s defense argue that a hard drive which contains incriminating evidence was destroyed due to circumstances that make him an innocent party in the case. These circumstances mirror those seen in the immature antics of Lloyd and Harry in the hit movie “Dumb and Dumber,” leading the prosecution to argue that the defense’s case was drawn directly from the plot of the movie.
The prosecution’s comparison of the defense’s argument to the movie isn’t the first time in recent months that Mr. Fried’s case has been compared to the celluloid classic. During an earlier hearing, the judge presiding over the case compared the defense’s behavior to Lloyd and Harry as well, rounding out the prosecutors argument that the defense’s case was contrived out of little more than a desperate attempt to stay out of jail.
Regardless of the outcome of the case, it appears that this trial will be remembered for years to come due to the fiery nature of the prosecution’s argument and their complete willingness to draw a direct correlation between the accused’s case and the fan-favorite movie “Dumb and Dumber.”
