The United Auto Workers (UAW) President, Gary Jones, recently warned the company’s members that further walkouts could take place at any time, amidst the on-going strike. This serves as a reminder to both the company and its workers that the strike is far from reaching a conclusion, and the possibility of a further escalation exists.
The protracted strike was first declared on September 16th, when the UAW and General Motors failed to reach a new labor agreement through traditional bargaining. This marked a painful yet necessary turn for UAW and its international membership of more than 400,000, who had all felt the brunt of GM’s decision to close five of its domestic facilities, even as the company continued to reap record profits.
In order to keep the strike going, UAW has implemented various strategies, all of which require the involvement of the company’s workers. Aside from the picketing of GM factories, union workers have also made it a point to ambush company executives during high-profile meetings. Perhaps most significantly, the International UAW has issued a call for a boycott of certain GM-exclusive products, a pressure tactic meant to force the company’s hand in negotiations.
The strategies have been effective so far, allowing GM to recognize the power of the union’s collective voice. Acknowledging the possibility of further escalations, GM has increased its offers to the union, in an effort to satisfy workers grievances.
However, as the strike continues, reaching a resolution remains a challenge for both sides. True to its word, the UAW has continued to deliver on its promise to utilize every tool at its disposal. Jones’ recent warning is a reaffirmation of the union’s commitment to not back down until a satisfactory labor agreement is reached.
With both parties now working through the challenges and disagreements to reach a successful conclusion, it is clear that the UAW and its powerful members are at the forefront of the struggle for workers rights. In the current labor climate, it is evident that unions are a vital factor in the advancement of worker rights and the fight for better wages and better conditions.
