Six GOP Lawmakers Call For Expulsion of Scandal-Plagued Rep. George Santos
A group of six Republican lawmakers have called for the immediate expulsion of U.S. Representative George Santos from Congress. The move comes after a series of scandals surrounding the long-time politician’s alleged misuse of campaign funds and allegations that he had sexual relationships with multiple Congressional aides.
Rep. George Santos has vehemently denied all allegations of misconduct, but his recent behavior has caused controversy and frustrated the Republican leadership in Congress. In response, the group of House Republicans from his home state of Texas has introduced a measure to expel him from Congress.
The six GOP lawmakers, Representatives John Carter, Kevin Brady, Chip Roy, Roger Williams, Bill Flores and Kenny Marchant, released a statement outlining their reasons for the drastic action.
“Rep. George Santos has betrayed the trust of the American people and has violated the rules of the House of Representatives,” the lawmakers said in the statement. “We believe strongly that his actions warrant expulsion and we have taken the steps to move to expel him in the coming days.”
If successful, the measure would become just the fifth time in U.S. History that a sitting Member of Congress has been expelled. Rep. Santos had previously been censured by the House of Representatives over the same issues, but the move to expel him is seen as a much stronger indication of the lawmakers’ frustration with his behavior.
The scandal-plagued politician has already been removed from the powerful House Appropriations Committee and stripped of other committee assignments in response to the allegations against him.
It is unclear when the measure to expel Rep. Santos will be introduced on the House floor, but the move could make for an interesting and tense day on Capitol Hill.
For now, Rep. George Santos remains in office but his future within the American political landscape appears to be in jeopardy. His peers have spoken and the next few weeks and months will likely prove to be a crucial time in his storied career.
