With the race to become the next House Speaker intensifying, Congressman Jordan of Ohio is making his case to moderate Republicans. The Ohio Representative is trying to appeal to Republicans across the political spectrum and has presented a manifesto outlining his vision and proposals for the Grand Old Party.
Congressman Jordan’s manifesto puts a spotlight on his conservative policies, as well as his fidelity to the Republican Party and its principles. The Ohio Representative pledges to oppose any efforts to enact gun control measures, Medicaid expansion, or any taxes that may violate the party’s dictums. He has also thrown his support behind legislation regarding national security and defense, border security, and military spending.
Jordan’s manifesto also includes some more progressive platforms that may appeal to moderate Republicans. Among other initiatives, he has hinted at the possibility of voting on an immigration reform bill that would grant protection to “Dreamers,” a term referring to undocumented immigrants who arrived in the United States as minors. He has also presented more moderate approaches to health care reform, saying there are elements of the Affordable Care Act that should be preserved while expanding access to care for eligible recipients.
In an attempt to appeal to both conservative and moderate Republicans, Jordan is hoping to rally the party behind him as the best candidate to lead the House of Representatives. He believes that taking a unified approach will help the Republican Party remain relevant in an ever-changing political landscape.
Whether or not Jordan’s manifesto will be successful in rallying the needed support remains to be seen, but it has certainly made an impression on some Republicans in the House. If his proposals gain enough traction, he could become the Party’s next House Speaker.
