Tragedy has struck North Dakota as a state senator and his family have died. On Saturday, an airplane belonging to Utah Senator Clarence L. Pettersen III crashed in the South Cascades Mountain Range killing him, his wife, and their two children.
Pettersen, originally from the town of Williston, ND, was crowned a Senator in November 2018 where he succeeded Sen. Rich Wardner. He became a state senator with the intentions of volunteering his service, and engaging in policy reform. He and his wife, Shirley, were both highly active members of the community and loved by many.
The cause of the plane crash is currently under investigation. The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) reported that the small plane went down amidst a “severe squall” and information has not yet been released on the model of aircraft.
The NTSB is currently leading the investigation, combing the wreckage to understand to what contributed to the accident and what could have possibly been done to prevent it.
The devastating news sent shock and sadness throughout Williston and beyond. Supporters and friends of the family posted their condolences on social media in day’s following the crash. The family was described as “caring and loving” among them and many grieved the loss of such a remarkable family.
In the wake of this tragedy, donations are being accepted for the Pettersen family to help cover the costs of the memorial services. Each of the funds collected on behalf of the couple’s two sons will be saved until they come of age.
The loss of Sen. Pettersen and his family members is a tragedy that many will not soon forget. His heart for service and commitment to community have left an indelible mark in the lives of many. A memorial service for him and his wife will be held on Saturday of this coming week. The community is invited to attend.
